Managing Fibroids In African American Women
Uterine fibroids are the most common gynecologic condition present in African American women in the US. The non-cancerous masses of tissue formed outside of the uterus may develop in women as young as 20 years old and tend to be larger in black women. Research studies have consistently shown that black women are 2-3 times more likely to develop fibroids than other ethnicities.
Why Are Black Women More Prone to Fibroids?
No known causes have been identified to explain why black women are more susceptible to fibroids but there are some commonalities between the women that have them. Here are some examples:
1-Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia
Researchers at Johns Hopkins found that hundreds of thousands of women have this common form of hair loss in common that may put them at increased risk for fibroids.
2- Obesity
Obesity is also a risk factor in developing fibroids. Refined sugar and diets high in fat have been connected to fibroid development in black women. The excess sugar in these food products is thought to negatively influence fibroid growth.
3- Genetics
Family history also appears to be a factor. Research has shown a familial connection with women that develop uterine fibroids.
*Note: This list is not exhaustive. Researchers continue to investigate fibroid development and other identifying factors impacting African American women.
Managing Heavy and Irregular Bleeding?
Fibroids can cause very heavy and irregular bleeding. One way to manage the heavy bleeding is to use organic feminine care. In 2012 The American Journal of Epidemiology revealed research that indicated an increased risk of uterine fibroids with the use of hair relaxers. Since the release of that report many holistic nutrition and wellness experts have warned women to make lifestyle changes that involve removing harmful chemicals and switching to natural feminine care products to lower their risk of developing fibroids and to help limit the growth of existing ones. These proponents urge women to use organic feminine care to reduce their exposure to toxic substances which can impact their uterine health.
