Understanding Painful Ovulation

For some women monthly pain associated with ovulation is a regular and normal experience. While there are some women that experience no pain at all while ovulating. Some women do. The pain is usually mild to moderate and resolves within hours or over the course of a day. The reason why some experience it while others don’t is unknown.

Why Do Some Women Experience Painful Ovulation?

Dr. Joy’ El Ballard, MD FACOG a Board-Certified Gynecologist in Annapolis, MD explains:  Follicles are small cysts that develop within the ovary. The singe dominant follicle becomes prepared for ovulation by circulating hormones.  Once there is surge of Luteinizing Hormone (LH), ovulation occurs. This LH surge results in an increase of prostaglandins and enzymes in the wall of the follicle. Subsequently, the follicle ruptures and the egg is released. When the egg is released, a small amount of blood and fluid from the follicle spills into the pelvis and this can hurt, hence ovulation pain. Ovulation is characterized by a change in the vaginal discharge, a sticky egg-white discharge. The rise in estrogen levels around this time stimulates cells in the cervix to create a different form of cervical mucus that is healthy for sperm and allow its mobility to contact the egg.

Bleeding with Ovulation

Along with pelvic pain some women may experience light bleeding just before or after ovulation. It may last a day or two and is caused by changes in hormone levels. Light bleeding can be managed by wearing a pad or pantyliner. Yonitox offers both pantyliners and light absorbency pads to manage ovulation bleeding. Tampons are typically not needed because the flow is light.

Managing the pain

Some women describe ovulation pain as a sharp pain that occurs on one specific side of the pelvic region. The pelvic region may hurt if pressure is placed on it and sexual intercourse and certain exercises may exaggerate the pain. To manage ovulation pain try taking over the counter pain relief, laying down or a warm compress for the stomach.

When it’s more than ovulation pain

Signs that you are experiencing more than ovulation pain are: Pain that lasts more than a day or two, passing large clots, and bleeding more than a day or two between your usual cycle. These can all be signs of something else going on. Don’t panic but keep a record of what you are experiencing, and its frequency then call your doctor.
